Primary X-ray photons travel along the gaps between lead strips and pass through the grid onto the detector. Random scattered photons strike the lead strips and get absorbed. Without an anti-scatter grid, scattered rays create a foggy overlay, blurring the boundaries between bone and soft tissue. This grid removes that fog and improves the distinguishability of subtle lesions.
