A collimator, also known as a “shutter”, “beam restrictor”, or “beam gate”, is installed at the window of the X-ray tube housing. It is specifically designed to block unnecessary primary X-rays during X-ray examinations. By limiting the X-ray irradiation field to the minimum necessary range, it effectively minimizes the X-ray dose received by the patient.
The core functions of a collimator can be summarized as follows:
- Dose Reduction: Limit the irradiation field, minimizing the radiation dose to both patients and operators.
- Image Clarity Enhancement: Reduce the area where secondary radiation is generated, thereby improving the clarity of fluoroscopic images and radiographs.
- Leakage Radiation Blocking: Maximize the blocking of leakage radiation.
